Pack Like A Contents Pro

One of our divisions here at DRYmedic is the Contents department, they are responsible for removing and packing all of the homes contents when we work on a job. They clean your personal belongings, pack them in boxes and put them in a private storage unit. Since they are such experts on packing, this weeks newsletter is their top tips on packing like a pro!

Keep a few things in mind:

Don't over-stress: yourself, take breaks, play some music, involve your kids and make it fun!

Work one room at time!

Break it up, don't do the whole house at once!

Assign roles: make your kids do their designated areas or help with small things like organizing!

Step 1: Declutter

If the room you're working in is one big mess, begin by decluttering. Throw out any garbage and starta donation pilefor any items you'd like to give away so we can make room for everything going in storage.

Step 2: Compartmentalize

This step doesn't need to be as overwhelming as it feels, you can organize in a few different ways here. For instance, your Christmas tree decor will stay together and if you typically put that in your basement begin with other items that also may go in the basement. Work category by category into which location they'll be stored.

Step 3: Clean

The hard part is almost over, next we just have to clean after ourselves. Now that you've decluttered and made your piles for storage, do a basic cleaning of the room. Dust, sweep, mop and clean any spills. You'll most likely want to do a deep clean after everything is done but for now we need to give the space a basic clean for you to work in.

Step 4: Organize

We're ready! Take thoseChristmas decorationsand organize them one step further, the box of ornaments, the box of decor, the box of family heirlooms etc. When we're storing the items in the box we always gently hand clean each item before putting them away. Make sure you're using tissue paper, bubble wrap or any materials you'd use for a barrier between items. A good example is plates, when packing plates in a box you want to put something in between them so they don't clank against each other and possibly break during transport.

Step 5: Label

At DRYmedic we use a QR code system, everything in each box has a code which pulls up a photo of the boxes contents. This may not be nessecary for your own boxes in your home but labeling makes you life 10x easier. Get fancy and use alabel makeror use some tape and sharpie to label each boxes category and contents.

Step 6: Store

All done! Last but not least we have to put them in their final resting place, whether its the basement, garage, attic, storage closets or any other hidden storage space make sure to store your boxes properly. If they are stored in an area that may experience possible water, like how the basement may possibly flood, usestorage optionsthat are raised off the ground so no water will spoil your boxes.

(P.S) If you are moving in to a new house, do a thorough inspection on what really does and doesn't need to come to the new home with you and make sure to pack boxes with good padding to minimize any breaks during transport.


When You're Moving

If possible, try not to move all at once and go little by little and do your biggest items like furniture last. Always remember your new home set up will be a little different so you'll have to re-strategize where your items new spots will be.
